Holidays
Australia's Public Holidays
Australia has seven public holidays each year
celebrated nationally. From New Year's Day to
Boxing Day, and to special Australian holidays
such as Anzac Day, Australians remember and
enjoy the spirit of these occasions with public
parades, family holidays and gift giving.
Anzac Day - 25 April
Anzac day is a day of remembrance for
Australians and New Zealanders. It is on this
day each year that the brave actions of the
Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC)
are commemorated in services and parades across
the country.
Australia Day - 26 January
Australia Day, January 26, is the biggest day of
celebration in the country and is observed as a
public holiday in all states and territories. On
Australia Day we come together as a nation to
celebrate what's great about Australia and being
Australian. It's the day to reflect on what we
have achieved and what we can be proud of in our
great nation.
Christmas Day - 25 December & Boxing Day - 26
December
The popular description of the meaning of
Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
Jesus is said to have been born to Mary and
Joseph in Bethlehem. The night they arrived,
there was no room for them to stay at the hotel.
There was only space in the stable - the animal
house for travellers' donkeys and horses.
Good Friday & Easter Monday
Easter Sunday falls on the first Sunday after
the first full moon after March 20th which marks
the Spring Equinox. Easter Sunday can fall
anywhere from March 22 to April 25th. Easter
Sunday, which is what people mostly refer to
when they say Easter, is at the end of the Lent
period.
Labour Day - 7 &14 March / 2 May / 3 October
Labour Day is a day of celebration for workers
in Australia with the public holiday falling on
different days in each state. The achievements
of better working conditions and the continued
support of workers' rights is at the heart of
the occasion. The major turning point in Labour
Day history for Australian workers' rights came
about with the introduction of the eight hour
working day.
New Year's Day - 1 January
New Year’s Day is the first day of the year, a
day to see in the New Year with family and
friends, a time for feasting and celebration.
But January wasn’t always the first month of the
year. It wasn’t until 1582 that Julius Caesar
changed the New Year to 1st January.
Queen's Birthday - 13 June / 26 September
Australia celebrates Queen Elizabeth's birthday
each year with a public holiday in each state on
the official birthday date. Queen Elizabeth was
actually born on 21 April 1926, however the
official day of celebration for her in Australia
this year is 13 June (except for Western
Australia where celebrations are on 26 September).
.Australia's Special Days
While Australia has many formal public holidays
throughout the year, there are several 'special
days' that are celebrated with loved ones here
in Australia as they are in many parts of the
world. Whether it's surprising your sweetheart
with flowers or gifts on Valentine's Day or
showing your parents how much you appreciate
them on Mother's Day and Father's Day.
Father's Day - 4 September
Father's Day is celebrated in Australia on the
first Sunday of September. The idea for Father's
Day first came about in Washington in the United
States. A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd thought
of the idea on Mother's Day in 1909. Having been
raised by her father, Sonora wanted him to know
how special he was to her.
Mother’s Day - 8 May
The earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be
traced back to the spring celebrations of
ancient Greece in honour of Rhea, the Mother of
the Gods. During the 1600s, England celebrated a
day called "Mothering Sunday". Celebrated on the
4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up
to Easter), "Mothering Sunday" honoured the
mothers of England.
Valentine's Day - 14 February
Surprising your loved one with a romantic
Valentine's Day getaway is the perfect way to
show them how special they are. Everyone has
their own ideas on romance - for some a
moonlight walk on a balmy beach makes for a
night to remember, while the glamour and
excitement of a chic city cocktail bar and
dancing the night away can create intimate
moments you'll treasure for life.
