What vaccinations are
necessary?
All travellers' immunisation
status should be checked prior
to overseas travel. All
travellers should have current
vaccinations against diphtheria,
tetanus, pertussis (whooping
cough), poliomyelitis, measles,
mumps and rubella.
Certain other vaccinations
are recommended when travelling
to developed countries, and some
countries refuse entry to
travellers who have not been
immunised against some serious
diseases.
Yellow fever is an acute
disease which some countries
require proof of immunisation
prior to entry. The disease is
endemic in many tropical
countries in Africa and South
America. See the list of
countries below to find out if
yellow fever is a risk at your
destination.
Although no country requires
cholera vaccination by law, it
is possible you will be required
to produce proof of immunisation
against cholera following a
recent outbreak.
The typhoid vaccine should
begin at least four weeks before
departure. A course of
anti-malaria tablets should
start one week after the typhoid
vaccinations are complete.
Malaria is a serious disease
and is a risk at many tropical
countries. Travellers should
take preventative measures by
taking anti-malaria tablets
before leaving, protect
themselves from mosquitoes
during their stay and have
prompt treatment if illness

Rabies is prevalent in parts
of Europe, North and South
America, Africa and Asia. A
pre-exposure immunisation
against rabies is recommended
for people visiting a rabies
endemic area for more than six
months. Travellers staying a
short time can take measures to
prevent rabies following an
animal bite by using
post-exposure immunisations and
rabies immunoglobulin within 48
hours.
A booster shot against
tetanus and polio is necessary
for adults who have not had them
within the last 10 years.
Vaccinations for hepatitis A
and B may also be necessary.
Hepatitis A is a risk in areas
with poor hygiene and is the
most common preventable illness
for overseas travellers.
Hepatitis B is prevalent in
Africa, most of South American,
Eastern Europe, South-East Asia,
the eastern Mediterranean area,
the Pacific Islands (excluding
Japan, Australia and New Zealand),
and China.
A single dose of
meningococcal vaccine is
recommended for travellers
visiting Northern India,
Mongolia, Nepal, Saudi Arabia
and sub-Saharan Africa.
Immunisations can take time
to be effective and make take up
to two weeks to work. Some
vaccines cannot be given at the
same time, so start your
immunisation programme up to six
weeks before leaving.
Children may need special
consideration if they have not
completed their childhood
immunisations.
